Dr Joseph Tabri Dentist
As a general practitioner, Dr Tabri offers  a wide range of restorative, reconstructive and preventative dentistry some of which are listed below:

Root Canals

Root canal is the procedure that refers to the removal of the nerve from within the tooth. It is usually performed when the decay  has reached the nerve chamber. Treatment consists of opening the tooth to relieve the pressure, removing the infected nerve, cleaning the canals and filling them with a special filler to seal the roots. All the decay is then removed and the root stump is reinforced with a core. The entire build up is finally covered with a crown to prevent the tooth from breaking. Although the tooth is technically non vital, it is still functionally sound and the cost of treating it is considerably cheaper than artificial implants or bridges.

TMJ

or Temporomandibular Joint is located at the point where the jaw meets the skull, one of the most complex  and flexible joints in the body. Symptoms of TMJ problems include pain in the joint, tenderness on chewing, headaches, clicking, popping or grinding noises, dizziness, toothaches, fatigue… Causes of TMJ problems are: Malocclusion or a poor bite due to a recent extraction, poorly fitting caps or fillings Stress and unconscious grinding or clenching Posture Trauma to the Jaw Your dentist will determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend a course of treatment that is most suitable for you. This might include habit breaking appliances, soft diet recommendation, bite correction and more recently Botox injections to relax jaw muscles.

Paediatric Dentistry

Baby teeth, just like permanent teeth, can decay, therefore abscess, cause pain, swelling and all the nasty side effects of a bad toothache.   They maintain proper spacing for the permanent dentition. An early extraction will cause the rest of teeth to shift, thus closing the space for the adult ones to erupt properly.   Baby teeth also guide the permanent ones in their eruption. An early extraction can lead the bone to form over the erupting adult tooth causing a delayed emergence, improper positioning or a combination of the two.   Baby teeth are needed for proper chewing and digestion.   A healthy smile helps build a strong personality and boosts self confidence. A good age to start seeing the dentist is 3 years. It is always better for the child to visit the dentist before any potential problems develop. A simple tooth counting/checkup is always easier than a filling the first time around, it also alleviates any fear the child may have and allows confidence to build.

Dentures

When all else fails, dentures are considered  the last resort, nevertheless they can aid in chewing, improve speech and boost self confidence . Dentures can be either partial (replacing the few missing teeth), or complete.   Partial dentures : Are used where only some teeth are missing and the existing ones are strong enough to support a partial denture with clasps, precision or semi-precision attachments. They are made of acrylic or a combination of a metal framework and acrylic.    Complete dentures : Where all the teeth are missing and full replacements are needed. Implant Retained Dentures: This is a tremendous improvement over regular dentures, as retention is greatly enhanced with strategically placed implants in the jaw, thus adding stability and comfort.

Oral Cancer

accounts for 2.3% of all new cancer cases and 1.5% of cancer deaths. Survival rate is below 50% after 5 years but early detection increases the rate of survival to 80%. Risk factors include: Smoking or chewing tobacco Heavy alcohol consumption Excessive sun exposure More common in men More common in people over 50 Signs include: Persistent sore, lump or  red or white patch; unusual bleeding, pain, numbness, swelling; a persistent change in voice or pain on swallowing. If unsure, always check with you dentist or MD.
